Mysore self-practice is the ideal environment for beginners to yoga. Students are taught individually within a group setting, in our experience this is the best and safest way to first learn. It ensures you work at your own pace and receive the personal attention you need when you need it. Beginners often assume that they will need to know the sequence before they start. This is not the case as poses are taught one by one in a methodical way to you are able to commit them to memory as you go.
Mysore self-practice classes always have students of mixed abilities and experiences working side by side and beginners to the practice are always welcome.
Your first few classes
In your first class you will be shown the sun salutations and how to breathe correctly, it will probably last around 30mins, there will be a fair bit or repetition as you learn the sequence. We have found this to be more than enough to start off.
Your next visit you will be shown the next posture and so on until you have built up a sequence that you can do without to much prompting or assistance.
Hands on adjustment
We teach in a traditional style which means we usually give physical, hands-on adjustments. Whilst we try to ensure that these are beneficial and safe we recognise that some people will still prefer not to be adjusted. We want to assure anyone who comes to our shala that you are free to say no to adjustments at any time and we will respect your wishes and will not ask you to explain your reasons.
Frequency and length of practice
Normally we ask students to commit to attending a minimum of three times a week at a regular time to make progress. We are flexible. Your first class will probably last 30-45 minutes.

Committing to a 6 day a week ashtanga yoga practice can sometimes be challenging at the start so plan a routine that works for you 2/3 days a week is a good place to start but even once a week will have great benefit. Do what you can with an eye on it becoming an essential part of your morning routine, just like brushing your teeth to clean them, the practice cleanses the body and your headspace ready for the day.
